Quick version of who's talking: I've been camping my whole life. Tents, truck beds, the occasional trailer when my back argues with me. Nobody pays me to say any of this, I've just spent enough nights on the ground to know what actually earns a spot in the bag.

Over the last couple of seasons a few cheap add-ons crept into my kit and never left. Not the big-ticket stuff, little things that run off the same battery as my drill back home. These three earned a permanent spot. Here they are, worst to best.

NUMBER THREE

A USB power cap that clips onto your battery

Topping the phone off the drill battery at camp. Once you do it you don't go back.

This one's almost too simple. A little cap clicks onto your tool battery and turns it into a power bank. USB-A and USB-C, that's it. But think how often something needs juice at camp: phone's dying, the headlamp's flat, the speaker quits halfway through the night.

Your tool battery is the biggest power source you brought and it's just sitting in the truck. Clip this on and you can leave the bulky power bank at home. I top my phone off a DeWalt pack on the tailgate now instead of rationing charge all weekend.

Where to get one: there are tons of these on Amazon. Just actually read the reviews so you don't grab a cheap one that dies in two weeks. That's the only catch.

NUMBER TWO

A cordless lantern that runs off your tool battery

Ran the whole evening off one pack last trip. No dead AAs to hunt for.

Looks like a regular lantern, but there's no batteries to fumble with in the dark, it snaps straight onto your tool battery and throws serious light. Way brighter than the little AA jobs, and it lasts. I didn't think I'd care about this one. Then it started bailing me out.

You're setting up in the last of the daylight, the headlamp's somewhere in the bag, and you need real light right now. No dead AAs, no hunting. The pack's already charged from the drill, snap it on, done.

NUMBER ONE  — THE ONE I REACH THE MOST

A little cordless blower that clears your campsite in seconds

The other two are useful. But this is the one that earned the list, the tool I grab so often it basically lives in the truck with a battery in it.

Prepping the ground before the tent goes down. This is the one that lives with a battery in it.

Here's the thing nobody warns you about camping: it's a hundred tiny messes. Pine needles and grit that find their way through the groundsheet by midnight and into your back by 2am. Sand tracked into the tent. Leaves in the tarp. Crumbs on the table. None of it is a big job, and that's exactly the problem.

For years I just swept what I could with my hands and told myself it'd be enough. It never was. Dragging out a big gas blower for that? You just don't. So the mess sits there and you sleep on it.

FIRST, WHAT THIS IS NOT

This won't replace a big leaf blower back home, and it's not trying to. It's the little brother you actually grab, the one that fits in the backpack side pocket and comes on every trip. Different job entirely. If you already own a big blower, you're not replacing it, you're filling the gap it was always too much for.

Why this one — I TRIED A FEW

I didn't just buy the first one I saw. I went through a handful of these little blowers that run on DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee packs, because honestly, most of them are garbage. A lot are all noise and no push, they sound busy and move nothing. A couple felt like they'd rattle apart by the second trip.
