Quick version of who's talking: I farm the same ground my grandfather did. Row crops, a couple of tractors, a combine that's older than my truck. Nobody pays me to say any of this, I've just spent enough seasons out here to know what earns its keep and what doesn't.

Over the last couple of seasons a few cheap add-ons crept into the shop and never left. Not the big-ticket stuff, little things that run off the same battery as my impact wrench. These three earned a permanent spot. Here they are, worst to best.

NUMBER THREE

A USB power cap that clips onto your battery

Charging off the drill pack out in the field. Beats a dead phone two hours from the house.

This one's almost too simple. A little cap clicks onto your tool battery and turns it into a power bank. USB-A and USB-C, that's it. But think how often something needs juice out here: phone's dying halfway through the day, the handheld GPS quits, a light goes flat in the shop.

Your tool battery is the biggest power source on the whole place and it's just sitting on the bench. Clip this on and you're never stranded with a dead phone in the back forty again. I top mine off a DeWalt pack right there in the cab now.

Where to get one: there are tons of these on Amazon. Just actually read the reviews so you don't grab a cheap one that dies in two weeks. That's the only catch.

NUMBER TWO

A cordless grease gun that runs off your tool battery

Greasing the front end before planting. Used to be a two-hand, ten-minute fight. Not anymore.

Looks like a regular grease gun, but there's no pumping the handle till your forearm gives out, it runs off your tool battery and pushes grease into every fitting on its own. I didn't think I'd care about this one. Then greasing the whole rig stopped being the job I put off.

You've got a combine with three dozen zerks and an hour of daylight left. Doing that by hand is why half of them get skipped and something wears out early. Battery's already charged, pull the trigger, every fitting gets its grease.

NUMBER ONE  — THE ONE I REACH THE MOST

A little cordless blower that clears a cab and undercarriage in seconds

The other two are useful. But this is the one that earned the list, the tool I grab so often it basically lives in the cab with a battery in it.

One pass through the cab before I climb down. This is the one that lives with a battery in it.

Here's the thing nobody warns you about farming: it's a thousand tiny messes that add up to a repair bill. Chaff packed under the seat and baked into the vents. Grit around the pedals. Mud in the joints and debris around the axles after every run. None of it is a big job on its own, and that's exactly the problem.

For years I put the machine away dirty because it was the end of a sixteen-hour day and I had nothing left. Then six weeks later something seizes and the repair makes the tractor look cheap. I knew the cost of cutting that corner. Having the energy to do something about it was another thing entirely.

FIRST, WHAT THIS IS NOT

This won't replace the air compressor and blow-gun in the shop, and it's not trying to. It's the one you actually grab, the one that rides in the cab and comes out every time you step down. Why this one — I TRIED A FEW

I didn't just buy the first one I saw. I went through a handful of these little blowers that run on DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee packs, because honestly, most of them are garbage.
